Travel guides about Seoul rarely mention Gangbuk-gu and Dobong-gu. But walk one block behind Exit 7 of Suyu Station (Line 4), and you’ll hit an alley with over ten grilled intestine restaurants packed shoulder-to-shoulder. Two stops north, Ssangmun-dong is a name every Korean knows — it’s the fictional home of two cultural icons: the K-drama Reply 1988 and the cartoon Dooly the Little Dinosaur. This area wasn’t built for tourists, which is exactly why it remains invisible to most travel guides.

What kind of neighborhood is Suyu & Ssangmun?
It’s one of Seoul’s oldest residential commercial zones, pressed right up against Bukhansan Mountain. The name Suyu (水踰) is literally about geography: water (水) that overflows (踰) — a reference to the streams that once spilled down from Bukhansan’s valleys and flooded the village. Locals used to call it Muneomi, a native Korean word meaning ”water crossing.” Old place names like Ppallaegol (Laundry Valley, where palace washerwomen used to work) and Hwagye (Flower Valley) still live on as neighborhood and temple names today.
Ssangmun-dong sits in a different administrative district. The Uicheon stream separates Suyu-dong in Gangbuk-gu from Ssangmun-dong in Dobong-gu. It’s a distance you can walk, but the district line splits them — which is why search results treat them as separate places even though they function as one neighborhood.
Four moments that built this commercial zone
- 1962 Ui Market opens — Gangbuk-gu's oldest market. It still runs in its original traditional-market format.
- 1966 Suyu Market opens — once ranked among Seoul's five largest traditional markets. It has a dual structure: a building-style market (Suyu Market) fused with an alley-style market (Suyu Traditional Market / Suyu Jaerae Market).
- 1970s–80s Dobong-ro commercial strip takes shape — some bus routes from the old Majang-dong intercity terminal shift here, and in 1985, Line 4 connects Suyu to the rest of Seoul, turning the area into the commercial hub of northeastern Seoul.
- September 2, 2017 The Ui-Sinseol Light Rail opens — originally planned to meet Line 4 at Suyu Station via the 4·19 Memorial Tower, it was rerouted toward Samyang-dong and Jeongneung. This is why you still take a bus from Suyu Station to reach the Bukhansan Ui-dong trailheads.
Why are there so many gopchang restaurants behind Suyu Station?
Because the alley behind Exit 7, near the Gangbuk-gu Office, is one of the densest clusters of grilled intestine restaurants in Seoul. Within a five-minute walk, there are over ten spots specializing in gopchang (small intestines) and daechang (large intestines). Add pork intestine stew places, and you pass twenty. This is an after-work crowd, not a tourist district — the alley only comes alive after 6 p.m.
Suyu Gopchang Hwangju-jip Main Branch (372 Dobong-ro) — Gopchang/daechang 2 servings ₩42,000, premium gopchang 2 servings (500g) ₩42,000. 12:00–23:30, closed 2nd & 4th Sunday of every month. Oneul Tongdak Suyu Main Branch (384 Dobong-ro) — The most traceable lineage on the block. Started in 1977 as Samseong Tongdak and rebranded while keeping the original menu. The founding year is baked into the menu names. Katsuaki Suyu Main Branch (26 Hancheon-ro 139-ga-gil) — The easiest solo-dining option on this list. Loin katsu ₩10,500, mazesoba ₩9,500, with cold soba and tonkatsu being the top-seller. Average bill around ₩20,000; peak hour is 1 p.m. Just remember: closed the first Tuesday of every month.
Gombo Naengmyeon (64 Nohae-ro 33-gil) — A naengmyeon house tucked inside Ui Market, and the cheapest meal in this entire guide. Mul-naengmyeon ₩7,500, double portion ₩8,500, whole dumplings ₩6,000. 11:00–19:00, closed Monday — but note: if a public holiday falls on a Monday, they stay open. The trap is the 7 p.m. closing time — you can’t come here for a late dinner.
Eunsu Sikdang Suyu (1063 Hancheon-ro) — Pork neck ₩16,000, samgyeopsal ₩17,000, pork king rib ₩18,000 per piece, doenjang-sulbap ₩6,000. Neck meat accounts for 62% of orders — it’s effectively a pork neck specialist. 13:00–23:00 (Sunday from 12:00), closed Monday.
What makes Suyu Market different from other Seoul markets?
An entire indoor-standing-bar alley lives inside a covered market arcade. Suyu Market opened in 1966 and now exists as two interlocking forms: a building-style market (Suyu Market) and an alley-style market (Suyu Jaerae Market / Suyu Traditional Market). It’s a daily permanent market — no market-day schedule — and the roof means you can wander even when it’s raining.
The Standing-Bar Alley — a silbijip lane inside the market
Deep inside Suyu Jaerae Market, there's a section lined with indoor pojangmacha (tent bars) and silbijip. The term silbijip literally means ''at-cost house'' — these are old-fashioned drinking dens where you order a few simple snacks and drink soju. Very few alley-scale clusters of this format survive in Seoul today. That said, these places were never designed with tourists in mind, so reviews occasionally mention curt service or owners who are selective about who they let in.

Inane Bunsik (18 Dobong-ro 67-gil, Suyu Jaerae Market, Ga-15) — A snack shop that opens at 8 a.m. Sundae ₩5,000, red bean porridge ₩5,000, yaki-mandu 3 pieces ₩2,000. Despite being inside the market, this is one of the few places confirmed to take card payments. It’s better known for its tteokbokki and handmade fried snacks.
Sanghyeondal Suyu Jaerae Market (22-ho, 17 Dobong-ro 71-gil) — Inside the standing-bar alley, one owner single-handedly cooks Japanese, Chinese, and Korean dishes. The stars are shimesaba (vinegared mackerel) and yuk-sashimi (raw beef). Spicy chicken neck stir-fry ₩12,000, yuringi ₩14,000. 14:00–23:00, closed Thursday. Tucked deep in the market, so first-timers often struggle to find the entrance.
Ttukbaegi Sundaeguk (120 Solmae-ro 45-gil) — Sundae-guk special ₩12,000, osori-gamtutang ₩11,000. Open kitchen, pure old-market atmosphere. 11:00–21:00, closed Thursday.
Why is Ssangmun-dong so famous?
Because virtually every Korean knows the name, but most have never set foot there. Ssangmun-dong is the fictional setting of three major Korean stories. In the cartoon Dooly the Little Dinosaur (serialized in the magazine ”Treasure Island” from 1983 to 1993), Dooly rides a glacier and washes up in Ssangmun-dong. The hit 2015 tvN drama Reply 1988 is set in the back alleys of Ssangmun-dong. And in 2021, Squid Game established its protagonist Seong Gi-hun as a Ssangmun-dong resident.
What to know before you go — the filming locations aren't here
The Reply 1988 alley was a purpose-built set. The school was shot at Shinmyeong Girls'' High School in Incheon, and the tteokbokki shop was in Seosan, Chungnam. So there is no spot in Ssangmun-dong where you can stand and see a scene from the drama. That said, the production team has said they referenced real Ssangmun-dong alleyways, and the hillside residential streets around Jeongui Girls'' High School still carry a similar 1980s feel. If you''re on a filming-location pilgrimage, you''ll be disappointed. If you want to soak in the atmosphere of a 1980s Seoul outskirts neighborhood, you''ve come to the right place.
There is one place where you can actually meet a character. The Dooly Museum (6 Sirubong-ro 1-gil, Dobong-gu) is a single-character museum that Dobong-gu built right in Ssangmun-dong. From above, the building is shaped like Dooly’s profile and the number 2. 10:00–18:00 (last entry 17:00), closed Monday. Admission: ₩4,000 weekdays, ₩5,000 weekends and public holidays. Parking is free.
When it comes to food, Ssangmun-dong has a clear identity: meat and alcohol. Around Ssangmun Station, there’s a bar strip nicknamed Ssangridan-gil — but the amusing twist is that the actual Ssangridan-gil zone straddles the administrative border into Chang-dong, Dobong-gu.
Podaepo (10 Dobong-ro 118-gil) — Salt-grilled pork (2) + pork rind (1) set ₩43,000, extra salt-grilled pork 160g ₩16,000, LA galbi 450g ₩39,000. 17:00–24:00, closed Sunday. The fact that kimchi-jjigae is their second-most-ordered item tells you everything: this is a neighborhood group-dinner spot where you eat grilled meat and finish with a stew.
Lee Yong-seon Chik Naengmyeon (66 Nohae-ro 60-gil) — Dried pollack-hoe naengmyeon ₩14,000, dried pollack-hoe mul-naengmyeon ₩14,000, bibim-naengmyeon and mul-naengmyeon ₩11,000 each. 10:00–21:00, closed Tuesday. A naengmyeon house that opens at 10 a.m., so it works for an early lunch.
Dongjeok Kkantonggui Ssangmun Main Branch (30 Dobong-ro 109-gil) — 12:00–24:00, open daily. One of the few barbecue spots in the area where you don’t have to think about what day it is.
Where should I go for coffee around here?
The café scene splits three ways: tiny roasteries where the coffee itself is the point / large spaces along the Uicheon stream / traditional tea houses up on 4·19-ro. Massive interior-design-driven cafés are not the norm in this neighborhood.

Jaeganjung (18 Dobong-ro 101-gil) — The most unusual spot on this list. Built right on the banks of the Uicheon stream as Seoul Mulbit Naru No. 11, it’s part café, part library with books, comics, and LPs — a hybrid cultural rest stop. Drinks start around ₩3,000, near public-facility pricing. Roughly a 10-minute walk from either Suyu or Ssangmun Station. Tue–Sun 10:00–21:00, closed Monday and public holidays.
Dajeongdo Byeong-in Yang (2F, 41-1 4·19-ro) — A traditional tea house on the road leading up to the 4·19 National Cemetery. Sujeonggwa (cinnamon punch) ₩8,300, jujube tea ₩9,500, omija tea ₩8,500, pumpkin sikhye ₩8,500. Red bean porridge is the house specialty. 11:00–22:00 daily, but note: it’s a no-kids zone with a 3-hour seating limit and 2-hour parking limit. The name comes from a line in a sijo (traditional Korean poem) by Yi Jo-nyeon of the Goryeo dynasty.
Coffee Culture Sa Suyu (32 Nohae-ro 32-gil) — Known for its tiramisu. Mascarpone tiramisu and sweet potato tiramisu are the #2 and #3 most popular items, while black coffee makes up 37% of orders — a roughly even split between coffee drinkers and dessert seekers. 12:00–21:00 (Monday from 11:00), closed Tuesday.
Norwegian Wood (32-6 Dobong-ro 87-gil) — Right next to the food alley but a complete vibe shift: a quiet scone café. Gourmet butter scone ₩3,800, Basque cheesecake ₩6,000–7,500. 11:00–22:00, closed Monday, no-kids zone. Open until 10 p.m., so it’s perfectly timed for a post-gopchang coffee.
Gabae Mihon (4 Dobong-ro 115-gil) — A small hand-drip café within walking distance of Ssangmun Station. Americano ₩3,500, latte ₩4,000. It’s famous for its coffee, not its interior, and the space is small — not a place to linger. 11:30–20:30 (Tue & Wed from 12:00), open daily.
What can I see here besides food?
From Suyu Station, a 10–20 minute bus ride gets you to a national cemetery, a Joseon-era temple, and the entrance to a national park. The real asset of this neighborhood isn’t the commercial strip — it’s Bukhansan rising right behind it.

Getting around: all you need to know
- Suyu Station Exit 7 is your door to the food alley and Gangbuk-gu Office. All the gopchang joints, the fried chicken place, and the gyukatsu spots are within a 500m radius.
- Suyu Market is on the opposite side. It's across Dobong-ro toward Mia Station — some entrances are actually closer to Mia Station than Suyu.
- Ssangmun is two stops on Line 4. Suyu to Ssangmun takes 4 minutes. You can also walk it along the Uicheon in about 30 minutes.
- For Bukhansan, take the Ui-Sinseol Line. It doesn't directly connect with Line 4 at Suyu Station, so plan ahead: either bus to Ui-dong or transfer at Sinseol-dong.
Which day of the week should I visit?
Wednesday and Friday are your safest bets. This area has a lot of old businesses, and their closing days are real and consistent. More importantly, the days off cluster by weekday. The table below should save you from a wasted trip.

Four time traps
- 3–5 p.m. is a dead zone for meals. Katsuaki (15:00–17:00) and Jin Sundae Gomtang (15:00–17:00) both have break time.
- The gopchang alley is an evening scene. Yukyuk Gopchang opens at 16:30, Tamradam at 17:00, Podaepo at 17:00. Go during the day and the alley is empty.
- Gombo Naengmyeon closes at 7 p.m. The cheapest meal in the neighborhood has the shortest hours.
- Conversely, some places do mornings. Inane Bunsik 08:00–, Sunday Bagel 08:30–, Oneul Tongdak 10:00–, Lee Yong-seon Chik Naengmyeon 10:00–.
