The short answer

  • The 31st Busan International Film Festival runs 6–15 October 2026, based at the Busan Cinema Center in Centum City.
  • General screenings cost 10,000 won. The opening and closing ceremonies are 30,000 won.
  • Tickets are sold online at biff.kr. Unsold and returned seats go on sale at venue box offices during the festival.

Every autumn, one of Asia’s biggest film festivals takes over a shopping district. For ten days the Centum City area of Busan fills with directors, critics, programmers, students and people who took the KTX down for a single screening, and people are waiting when the outdoor box office opens at 08:30.

The 부산국제영화제 (Busan International Film Festival, BIFF) is also one of the easiest major festivals for an ordinary visitor. You do not need accreditation. Tickets cost about the same as a normal cinema seat, and most films carry English subtitles. Here is how it works in 2026, and how to plan if you are reading this for next year.

When is BIFF 2026, and is it too late to go?

It is not too late. The 31st BIFF runs from Tuesday 6 to Thursday 15 October 2026. According to Star News, the festival moved its opening day from the usual Wednesday to a Tuesday this year.

Tickets are already on sale. General screenings opened online on 21 September, so the most talked-about titles and weekend evening slots are likely sold out. There is still a lot to see, and returned seats keep appearing (more on that below).

Korean press reports put this year’s official selection at more than 240 films from 59 countries, 95 of them world premieres, with 14 films in the competition section. The ticket catalogue lists the opening ceremony at 18:00 on 6 October at the Roof Theater. The competition is only in its second year. For most of its history BIFF was mainly a showcase, with its awards focused on new Asian directors. The opening film is The Table: Day and Night (낮과 밤은 서로에게), an 80-minute Korean ensemble piece by Kim Jong-kwan. It is set in one café, where four couples meet between summer and autumn.

Planning for 2027?

BIFF does not fix its dates far ahead, and they move around. The 2023 festival ran 4–13 October, 2025 ran 17–26 September, and 2026 runs 6–15 October. Assume a ten-day window between mid-September and mid-October, and watch biff.kr from late summer. The timetable and ticket catalogue usually come out a few weeks before the festival. Ticket sales open soon after, in stages, with ceremonies and special events first and general screenings a few days later.

A short history: from Nampo-dong to Centum City

The first festival ran from 13 to 21 September 1996. It screened 169 films from 31 countries and drew 184,071 admissions, according to BIFF’s own archive. It was held in the old cinema district of 남포동 (Nampo-dong), with outdoor screenings. It is widely described as Korea’s first international film festival. In the space of a few editions it became the place where the rest of the world came to find new Asian cinema, and where Asian filmmakers came to find the rest of the world.

The street where it started is now called BIFF광장 (BIFF Square), with handprints of visiting directors and actors set into the pavement and the famous street-food stalls selling ssiat hotteok, seed-filled sweet pancakes.

The festival changed its English name from Pusan to Busan in February 2011, following the national romanisation rules. That September its purpose-built home, the Busan Cinema Center, opened in Centum City, and the 16th festival in 2011 was the first held there. Since then the centre of gravity has been Haeundae-gu, not the old downtown.

Where are the BIFF venues?

Almost everything is within walking distance in Centum City. The exception is the community strand in Nampo-dong.

Busan Cinema Center
The festival's home: the open-air Roof Theater, the Haneulyeon Theatre, Cinema 1 and 2 and the Cinematheque. Ceremonies and Open Cinema happen here.

CGV Centum City, including its IMAX screen, and Lotte Cinema Centum City, in the department-store buildings across the road.

Busan Cinema Center (영화의전당)

The 영화의전당 (Busan Cinema Center) is hard to miss: a huge cantilevered roof covered in LED lighting, which is spectacular after dark. Under it is the Roof Theater, the open-air auditorium where the opening and closing ceremonies take place and where the Open Cinema strand screens new popular films at 20:00 “under the stars”, in the festival’s words. The red carpet at the opening ceremony on 6 October is the moment most photographed from the stands. You need a ceremony ticket to be seated.

The main outdoor BIFF Ticket Box is also here. The nearest subway stop is Centum City Station on Line 2.

Open-air screenings get cold

Busan in October is mild by day, but evenings at the Roof Theater are windy and cool once the sun goes down, and screenings run past 22:00. Bring a jacket. In the Haneulyeon Theatre and some other halls, only bottled water is allowed inside.

Megabox Busan Theater, Nampo-dong

Community BIFF, the strand where local audiences programme and host screenings, runs at 메가박스 부산극장 (Megabox Busan Theater) by BIFF Square. It is a good way to see where the festival started. Two warnings: English subtitles are provided only for selected Community BIFF screenings, and the festival box office there, on the 4th floor, is open only from 8 to 11 October (09:30–20:00). Nampo-dong is on the other side of the city, close to an hour from Centum City by subway, so do not plan back-to-back screenings across the two.

How do you buy BIFF tickets as a foreigner?

Online, on the official site. BIFF sells all standard seats through biff.kr, which has an English version, and you pay by credit or debit card. No Korean phone number or ID is mentioned as a requirement. You do need to register a new account every year, verified by email.

How to book, step by step

  • Register on biff.kr (English version) with email verification. Last year's account does not carry over.
  • Use Chrome, which BIFF recommends for booking on PC or mobile. Do not log in on two devices, browsers or tabs at once, because simultaneous sessions on one account are blocked.
  • Note the opening times. In 2026 ceremonies, Open Cinema, Midnight Passion, Actors' House and Community BIFF opened on 17 September at 14:00 KST. General screenings, Master Classes and Cine Classes opened on 21 September at 14:00 KST.
  • Book a maximum of two tickets per screening code.
  • Pay by credit or debit card. If a foreign card is declined, try another, or buy at a box office once you arrive.
  • Carry the live mobile ticket. Screenshots and confirmation emails or texts are not accepted at the door. You can exchange the mobile ticket for a paper one at any BIFF Ticket Box.

Sold out? Buying on the day

Any seat that did not sell online, or that someone cancels, is released for sale at the BIFF Ticket Boxes during the festival. People cancel right up to 60 minutes before a screening, so it pays to refresh the online listing and to ask at the box office. There is no official standby queue. What you are relying on is returns.

Which BIFF screenings have English subtitles?

Most of them, but you must read the code. Every screening in the timetable carries a subtitle code, and one of them means no English at all.

🔤 BIFF subtitle codes (2026 ticket catalogue)

CodeWhat it meansOK without Korean?
UnmarkedEnglish subtitles, Korean dialogueYes
KEKorean subtitles plus English subtitles, or English dialogueYes
KNKorean subtitles, non-English dialogue, no English subtitlesNo
KKKorean subtitles, Korean dialogueNo

A GV mark means a guest visit: the director or cast do a Q&A after the film. Check the listing for interpretation if the guest speaks a language you do not. The Q&As are one of the best reasons to come.

The rules people get caught by: entry opens 15 minutes before the film and closes 15 minutes after it starts, and your reserved seat is not guaranteed if you are late. Children under 4 are not admitted. Any photography or video during the screening is banned, including the trailers and the end credits. Outside food and alcohol are not allowed in.

Asian Contents & Film Market: can you go?

Only if you work in the industry. The Asian Contents & Film Market (ACFM) runs alongside the festival, 10 to 13 October 2026. It is a trade market for sales agents, buyers, producers and financiers, held at the Busan Cinema Center, and entry is by market badge registered through acfm.kr. For a film fan it is not worth the badge. The public side of the festival is the Actors’ House talks, Master Classes and outdoor events, which are listed on the festival’s events page as the dates approach.

Where to stay and how to get there

Stay in Haeundae or near Centum City. The Busan Cinema Center is a short subway or taxi ride from Haeundae Beach, and you will be making the trip several times a day. Book early, because festival week is busy. Our Busan neighbourhood hotel guide compares Haeundae, Seomyeon, Gwangalli and Nampo-dong. Seomyeon is a good fallback, on the same subway line (Line 2) as Centum City.

From Seoul, the KTX to Busan Station is the standard route, and from Busan Station you reach Centum City by subway with one change at Seomyeon. For times, fares and whether one day is enough, see KTX and SRT day trips from Seoul. If you are adding a day of sightseeing around the screenings, Busan from Seoul in two days has a realistic budget.

A realistic first-timer plan

  • Pick two or three films with KE or unmarked codes and a GV session, and book them the day general sales open.
  • Add one Open Cinema evening at the Roof Theater for the outdoor experience.
  • Leave gaps. Use them to check the box office for returns and to walk Centum City between screenings.
  • Spend one afternoon in Nampo-dong at BIFF Square, where the festival began.
