The short answer

  • #1 is Cheongsu Foods udon broth sauce, 1.8L x 6 (₩39,380). Four of the top 10 are food.
  • 36.1% of the 72 unique bestsellers cost under ₩20,000. Median price ₩26,230, average ₩28,391. The top ranks are repeat-purchase consumables, not luxury goods.
  • The biggest category is food (29 items, 40.3%). Everyday consumables fill the list, not clothes or electronics.
  • Rocket Delivery covers 88.9% (64 items). 54.2% carry a discount badge, median 27%.

What do Koreans buy on Coupang? The usual answer comes from transaction-value statistics — which get skewed by a few expensive items. So this time I counted by sales volume. I took Coupang’s top-100 “Best Sellers” tab exactly as it appeared on screen, removed duplicate product IDs, and measured all 72 unique products by category, price, rating, reviews, discount and Rocket Delivery status.

How this was measured

This is the August 2026 edition. The month-end automated run slipped into September, so I collected on 2026-09-04 from Coupang's Best-100 sales-volume page: product name, sale price, list price, discount rate, rating, review count and Rocket Delivery flag. After removing 28 rows that repeated the same product ID, 72 unique products remained. Every figure below is calculated directly from that dataset. The ranking uses Coupang's internal algorithm and actual sales quantities are not disclosed, so read it as a relative popularity indicator.

Cheongsu Foods Udon Broth Sauce 1.8L x 6
#1. A food-service sized broth concentrate topping the general-consumer chart. 25,432 reviews.

Velsal Automatic Cat Toy
#2. A brand-new item with just 30 reviews at #2 is a textbook "rising now" signal.

Tabasco Hot Sauce 350ml x 2
#3. 37,041 reviews. A restaurant-brand sauce selling into home kitchens.
🥤
Beobe Milkshake Powder 1kg x 2
#4. A café-grade powder. The same brand's five-grain powder follows at #10.
The character of the top ranks: four of the top 10 are food. The most expensive item is ₩80,970 (premium goat-milk formula) and the cheapest ₩5,890 (a personal name seal). A sales-volume list measures "how often people buy something," so a product you buy once every three years can never beat a consumable you buy every week. This list shows not the size of Korean wallets but the rhythm of Korean daily life.

How Does the Coupang Ranking Break Down by Category?

📦 Category mix of the 72 best sellers (2026-09-04)

Pet supplies22.8%

Clothes and electronics are nearly absent for a simple reason: the sort order. Sales volume measures “how often people buy,” so a phone or laptop bought once every few years can never outrank groceries bought every week. Food leading with 29 items says exactly that.

How Much Do People Spend on Coupang? — 36.1% Under ₩20,000

💰 Price distribution (72 items)

₩20,000–29,9991723.6%
₩30,000+2940.3%

The median is ₩26,230 and the average ₩28,391. The priciest was ₩80,970 and the cheapest ₩5,890. The pattern is the same as always: the top ranks are consumables bought in bulk, not expensive items. The ₩30,000+ band being the largest (40.3%) is driven by bulk packs — two tins of formula, a 340-stick coffee-mix set, and so on.

Can You Trust the Coupang Discount?

Out of 72 items, 39 (54.2%) carried a discount badge, with a median listed discount of 27% and 10 items showing 50% or more.

When over half the list wears a permanent discount, that is not a discount — it is part of the price tag. Deep markdowns are a sales tactic for budget lines, while premium lines simply do not discount.

How to read Korean online prices

  • Ignore list price and discount — look only at the sale price. Coupang shows a per-unit price under the product name; compare with that number only.
  • Wow and coupon discounts are conditional. A "Wow" badge is the monthly paid-membership price. Non-members do not get it.
  • Review count is sales history. If a similarly priced item has only a few hundred reviews, it is new or slow-moving.
  • Prices change by the hour. This table is a 2026-09-04 snapshot.

Ratings Are Useless Here — Use Review Count Instead

The average star rating is 4.88 and 78.6% score 4.7 or higher. Star ratings barely discriminate.

Look at review counts instead. Reviews are accumulated history; rank is current sales. The most-reviewed item on this list is Haitai Ace crackers at 91,535 reviews.

Trending vs. Best Sellers — What Is the Difference?

I also collected the real-time trending list (72 items). On 2026-09-04 the top of the trending list was almost identical to the best-seller list — collecting both at the same moment can make them overlap. In months when the two lists diverge, this is where the trending top 10 will go.

Trending vs. best sellers

Real-time trending shows products with fast-rising views and purchases over a short window; best sellers show accumulated sales. At season changes, new-season items climb trending first, then settle into the next month's best-seller list. Reading both together reveals this month's signal.

How Can Travelers Use This List?

Honestly, most items here are things a traveler cannot or should not buy. Bulk packs do not fit in a hotel room, and Coupang has account and payment hurdles for foreign visitors.

The real value of this table is as a price baseline — a yardstick for judging whether the prices you see at supermarkets and convenience stores during your trip are reasonable.

Good souvenirs vs. bad souvenirs

  • Good: light, unbreakable, small-pack food, coffee mix and seasonings. Low unit cost, small footprint.
  • So-so: cosmetics. Physical-store 1+1 promos are often cheaper than online.
  • Skip: water, milk, eggs and other fresh or heavy items. Low value-to-weight ratio, and you cannot take them out of the country.
  • Liquid items face carry-on limits. Even in checked luggage, pack them against leaks.

What Sales Volume Tells Us About Korea

By transaction value, Korean e-commerce looks like a market for food delivery and travel products. But by sales volume, it is a market for everyday consumables.

There is nothing glamorous on this list. From #1 to #72, every item is something you use up and buy again. Korea’s e-commerce penetration is high not because people buy special things online, but because they buy the most ordinary things online.
