The short answer

  • Huam-dong is a quiet residential pocket on Namsan's western slope — the draw is alleyway cafes, a traditional market, and hilltop views.
  • Namyeong-dong is a flat grid of backstreets right next to Seoul Station — 30-year-old institutions and Culinary Class Wars chefs' restaurants packed into a single block.
  • They're a 15-minute walk apart. Start with coffee in Huam-dong, wind downhill into Namyeong-dong, and end with dinner. It's the most efficient route.

Namyeong-dong and Huam-dong: what's the deal with these neighborhoods?

Turn your head toward Namsan from Seoul Station and there they are — two neighborhoods you’ll rarely find on a tourist map. Among Seoul locals, they’re known as the place you go when Seongsu and Yeonnam start feeling like too much. Both share one thing: no lines.

Background

Huam-dong has worn many identities — a village outside the city walls during the Joseon era, a Japanese residential quarter under colonial rule, then a neighborhood shaped by its proximity to the Yongsan U.S. military base. That's why the alleys are narrow, the staircases are everywhere, and old houses still double as cafes today.

Namyeong-dong was a printing-press district for decades. In 2014, young shop owners started moving into the old print shops and coined the nickname Yeoljeong-do (Passion Island). More recently, renowned chefs looking for affordable rent have opened their own spots in these backstreets, and the vibe has completely shifted.

Where do locals actually get coffee in Huam-dong?

The defining trait of Huam-dong cafes: they’re small. You won’t find sprawling bakery-cafes here. Most are converted ground-floor units or rooftop spaces with 10 to 20 seats, tucked into the neighborhood’s compact grid. You can hit them all on foot.

🍰
Huam Yeollip
The undisputed castella king of Huam-dong. Black sesame cream castella and the Salt Hill latte are the signatures.
Compotable Namsan
A roastery famous for value. Cloud lattes in the 3,000-won range — unheard of in central Seoul.
🍮
Undept
The tiramisu spot. Cafe by day, wine and highballs by night — a rare dual-life operation.
🍓
Avec El
Right by Huam Market. A neighborhood stalwart that's outlasted trends with fruit toast and eclectic decor.

Huam Yeollip

The name gives it away — yeollip means row house, and this cafe is exactly that, a converted old residential unit. They slice the castella to order, so it arrives warm. The black sesame cream castella runs about 7,600 won, the signature Salt Hill latte around 6,500 won. Seats are hard to come by come afternoon.

Compotable Namsan

The most affordable cup in Huam-dong. A roastery slinging lattes in the 3,000 won range — in the center of Seoul, that’s practically a public service. Seating is limited, so most people grab and go. You’ll see locals picking up a coffee here before heading up to Namsan for a walk.

Undept

Right on the way up from Sookmyung Women’s University Station into Huam-dong. Tiramisu is the headliner, but come evening it flips into a wine and highball bar. One of the few spots in Huam-dong where you can settle in and stay past dark.

Walking Tip

  • Coming up from Seoul Station Exit 12? It's a climb. From Sookmyung Women's University Station, it's gentler. If you're not up for the hill, grab a 5-minute taxi from Seoul Station to Huam Market, then walk your way down.
  • The alleys are narrow and parking is basically nonexistent. Leave the car behind.
  • Most cafes open between 11:00 and 11:30 a.m. Show up at 10 and you'll be staring at a lot of closed doors.

Where to eat in Huam-dong

The cafes skew new-school, but the restaurants are mostly old-guard. The anchor is Huam Market — a proper traditional market where vegetable and fruit stalls, banchan shops, and kalguksu joints tangle together inside a maze of narrow lanes.

Why is Namyeong-dong suddenly the neighborhood everyone's watching?

The answer is simple. Rent. While neighboring Yongridan-gil and Samgakji priced themselves out of reach, Namyeong-dong stayed cheap — the commercial district was considered “neither here nor there.” Famous chefs looking to open their own places saw an opportunity and took it.

Three restaurants by chefs from Netflix's Culinary Class Wars sit within a single Namyeong-dong block. Chef Oh Jun-tak's Namyeongtak, Chef Ko Seok-hyun's Namyeong Dongyangmun, and Napoli Matfia Kwon Seong-jun's Via Toledo Pasta Bar — all within a 5-minute walk of each other.

Namyeongtak
Wood-fired whole chicken. Chef Oh Jun-tak of Culinary Class Wars. Don't show up without a reservation.
🥩
Namyeong Dongyangmun
Beef ribs and ox tongue. Chef Ko Seok-hyun's tasting-menu-style grill house.

Napoli Matfia Kwon Seong-jun's pasta bar. Seats are extremely limited.
🐖
Namyeongdon
30 years of oak-charcoal grilling. The original reason anyone came to Namyeong-dong to eat — often called one of Seoul's top three barbecue spots.

Namyeongdon

Near Sookmyung Women’s University Station Exit 6. Pork belly, pork neck, jowl, and skirt meat grilled over an oak-charcoal fire. This is the place people came to Namyeong-dong for long before the celebrity chefs arrived. Expect a wait during the evening rush.

Nambak

A 5-minute walk into the alley from Sookmyung Women’s University Station Exit 10. Rice noodles in a broth made from Korean beef — not your standard pho. They’re open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. only, so you can’t slot this into an evening plan. Ideal as a late breakfast / early lunch to kick off the day.

Namyeong Arcade

Not a place to eat, but you’d be remiss to walk past it. An arcade-style structure built as a public market in 1922 — it’s stood on this spot for over a century. You’ll bump into it naturally as you wander through Namyeong-dong’s backstreets.
